U2 on Radio 2? No, it's Us4//U2 on Radio
1
8:43am
Thursday 26th February 2009
By David Knights »
A U2 tribute band with a musician from Keighley has played live on Radio
1. Jake Newiss and his US4//U2 bandmates played the station's "Live
Lounge" in place of the real U2. They played two songs as part of
Radio 1 events marking the release of U2's latest album and single. While
the tribute act performed in a room the size of a double bedroom the real
band prepared for a major concert. The members of Us4//U2, who dress like
their famous counterparts, were interviewed by presenter Nick Grimshaw.Jake,
38, from Oakworth, has performed in bands in West Yorkshire for around
two decades since starting out in Keighley groups. With US4//U2 -- whose
other members live in Leeds -- he regularly performs across the UK and
Europe. Upcoming gigs include St Patrick's night aboard a North Sea ferry
and a summer outdoor festival in the Azores.
Jake and fellow US4//U2 members also play in Desilva, performing their
own rock and pop material across the North.Jake said the Radio 1 performance
went down well with listeners, with many texting to say they sounded better
than the real U2. The
appearance allowed band members to give out CDs of their Desilva songs
to BBC DJs including Vernon Kay.

Us4//U2 performed in the Live Lounge at BBC Radio 1 on the Nick Grimshaw
Show Sat 21st Feb 2009.
We got the call directly from the BBC producers a week before the show.
The BBC and
U2 had an ongoing publicity drive going which coincided with the
release to their new album "No Line on the Horizon".
Scott our bass player sorted out the Live Lounge details and booked our
BBC Radio 1 debut.
We had a gig
on the Friday night before the Live Lounge so with just 1 hours sleep
we met up
in the early hours and travelled through the night arriving at Great Portman
Street about 730am.
On arrival we checked in with security and were issued BBC Visitor passes.
We brought our instruments through the BBC Radio 1 reception and were
met by one of the shows
producers Phil who showed us the way to the Live Lounge.
As we walked into the Live Lounge we could hear Nick Grimshaw on air and
he gave us a wave
through the studio glass as he was sat next door.
Having arrived early we had lots of time to tune up and relax and have
a few coffees
whilst the
technitions plugged us all in. We sound check a couple of songs off air
to make sure all the levels we perfect for our debut Live Lounge performance.
Closer to
our scheduled performance time Nick Grimshaw was asking the Radio 1 listeners
to text in and guess who his special guests were in the Live Lounge:-)
Then at about
940am Nick told the listeners it was time to reveal who the special guests
were..
Suggestions included McFly, N-Dubz, Take That and Queen! But it was actually
U2 tribute band Us4//U2.
He played a jingle which the producers had made as a link to our introduction.
This jingle was a very funny as it gave the listeners the idea that the
REAL U2 were in the studio
but at the very end of the jingle said "Sorry the real U2 cant be
here" and the rest is history.
Nick then introduced Us4//U2 to the Radio 1 listeners (3million) and each
of us had to
tell the listeners which character we played in the band. Andy (Bono)
was unable to make it
so luckily Dave the singer from our other band Desilva
stepped to do a
fine job as Bono - A Tribute to a Tribute :-). Jake who plays keyboards
introduced himself as the "Mystery Man" as U2 dont have a keyboard
player.
After the formalities we went on to play our first track "One".
As we were playing live on air we could see Vernon Kay outside the Live
Lounge door
who had stopped to pull a face through the glass on his way to prepare
for a
show in the next door studio as he was on air at 10am.
A listener texted in as we played saying "OMG they should be called
BETTER THAN U2".
All the texts were amazing and ALL positive about our performance.
Nick then played a couple of songs only to bring us back to another different
jingle..
He asked us what we would be playing next and we said "With or Without
You"
which he indicated that was his favourite song. At this point he started
to introduce us and
Andy (Larry Mullen Older) piped up and said "Don't you want to chat
more??!".
Nick sounded
a little shocked as Andy our drummer went on to plug our original band
"Desilva".
As Dave our frontman from our other band was coming down with us to Radio
1 we took the opportunity
to take copies of our NEW Desilva Album "Don't
Give Up Your Day Job" and give copies out.
This Album will be available soon keep you eyes peeled on the Desilva
Website:-

We all had a brilliant time and were buzzing after the show!
Nick and his producer both came into the Live Lounge to thank us all and
we had
some photos taken which you can see in the //GALLERY
After loading our van we went for some breakfast and a beer an drove back
to Leeds
for a well deserved kip :-) zzz

"No Line on the Horizon"
"Get
on your Boots" - U2's first single was released on Mon 19th Jan 2009.
The first airing of the single was on radio station RTE2fm which is the
station of Dave Fanning
who is a close friend of Bono's.
Us4//U2
will be adding "Get on Your Boots" to their setlist in the near
future!!!

Us4//U2 performed at Brands Hatch on Sunday the 9th April 2006 on the
day of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship as seen on ITV1.
// We were outside on a balcony over looking
the start line of the track and facing the main
seating stands.
// It was mostly a cloudy/windy day and as
we were elevated up on a viewing area IT WAS FREEZING!
Luckily we were only required to play 3xsingle songs and 1x25 min set.
I have to say this has to be the coldest gig to date! Our hands were turning
blue!
Having said all that we had a great day watching all the days races in
our own private suite B11
which over looked the track giving us a birds-eye view of all the action.
// Thanks goto Stuart who looked after Us4//U2
and made sure we catered for.
Stuarts boss, Jonathan Palmer (Ex Formula One racing Driver)
was spotted taking some snap shots of Us4//U2.
// Overhaul a good day was had by all !!
Hopefully you will be seeing Us4//U2 at another race track near you soon!!

// Chris Evans invited Us4//U2 to PLAY on

so that we could take part in the dress rehersal for the pilot shoot.
At 9pm on the Sunday evening Us4//U2 took part in a 45min pilot filming

After the show we made our way to the green room where Chris Evans and
